VHS Team

The Voluntary Health Scotland team consists of five staff, with two members working part-time.

Helen Tyrrell - Director Helen joined VHS in 2000 with a background in public health, following an earlier career in languages education.

She has worked in university and NHS public health settings, and for the last 18 years in the voluntary sector, with over four years at Alzheimer Scotland Action on Dementia and over six years with Save the Children UK.

As Director of VHS Helen believes that voluntary health and community sector action has enormous potential to improve health and health care in Scotland.

Helen is a member of SCVO's Policy Committee and Management Board. In her spare time she enjoys the arts, travel, the great outdoors and politics.

Bill Weir - Partnership Development Officer Bill joined VHS in 2002 with a background in mental health.

He has worked in a variety of hospital based settings and for the six years prior to joining VHS in the psychiatric rehabilitation services.

As Partnership Development Officer, Bill believes that it is important for all sectors to work together as equal partners in delivering health care and improvement to the people of Scotland.

Bill is a Director of the North Lanarkshire Health Project and in his spare time enjoys working on Japanese cars and the company of his family.

Phil McAndrew - Communications Officer Phil joined VHS in 2005 with a background in Information Technology management.

He has worked in a number of London based financial organisations in positions such IT support, infrastructure development, IT management and web design.

As Communications Officer, Phil coordinates the retrieval and delivery of important information to members and others in the sector via the VHS website, electronic newsletters, marketing material and regular Briefings.

Phil is also responsible for developing and maintaining the VHS website.

Alison Crofts - Senior Administrator Alison joined VHS in 2000, having previously worked in the financial services industry.

Alison is VHS's Senior Administrator and her role is to maintain and develop the operation of the VHS office, including the administrative functions associated with the financial control of VHS budget and human resource issues.

Alison also provides administrative support to the Director and VHS team, prepares and distributes papers to the VHS Board of Directors and with the team organises VHS conferences and events.

Sandy Mathieson - Administrative Assistant Sandy joined VHS in 2008 with a background of the military, business ownership and working in the Voluntary Sector.

He is responsible to the VHS team for updating database information and keeping the office stationery replenished.

With a good knowledge of IT, Sandy also helps the team streamline systems and retrieve information to help increase membership.
