08 - 05 - 06: Hidden Harm - Next Steps
Abstract: Our vision is that all children in Scotland should be safe, nurtured and healthy. They should have the opportunity to reach their full potential in education and grow to become active responsible citizens. However, there is a group of children who have not been able to benefit fully from the opportunities available. These are children affected by substance misusing parents. Across Scotland there are an estimated 40,000-60,000 children affected by parental drug use. An estimated 80,000-100,000 children are affected by parental alcohol misuse. This document sets out what the Executive is doing with its local partners - in education, health, social work, police and criminal justice - to bring about the improvements needed. It also identifies further action to be taken. |

20 - 04 - 04: Bowel Cancer Framework for Scotland Abstract: Bowel cancer is an important health issue worldwide and, in Scotland, it represents a major problem. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in this country, and the incidence, which is currently 53.5 per 100,000 of the population, increased by 12% in men and 2.1% in women between 1991 and 2000 (Information and Statistics Division). Although the outcome of treated bowel cancer has improved over time, five-year survival is still in the region of 40%. If continuing improvements are to be made, a range of initiatives and actions are required across a range of areas and specialties, from prevention, through earlier detection, treatment, palliative care and ongoing research. In this framework, the key components of a national bowel cancer service programme are outlined, under the headings of Basic Elements, Service Implications and Research Implications. |

March 2003: Improving Health in Scotland - The ChallengeAbstract: There is both a need and the opportunity to boost the health (physical, social and mental) of the people of Scotland - something that is fundamental to the happiness and prosperity of individuals, families, communities and the whole country. Scotland faces a tougher challenge to improve health than most other countries in the Western world. The Scottish Executive, the Health Department, NHSScotland and a much wider group of stakeholders are all important to the delivery of health improvement. Part of this challenge is to ensure that Health Improvement is achieved with clarity of purpose, shared aims and commitment across Scottish life, and with leadership which instils vision and the confidence to change - and to improve. |
