Alan Cowan is a retired RAF officer, having served 35 years in the RAF Medical Services where he carried our a wide range of senior health leadership appointments in the UK, Europe and USA. He was responsible for the leadership of a specialist medical team delivering worldwide aero-medical evacuation and subsequently represented the UK on veterans’ health issues in the US Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington. Before he retired he led the development of a new strategy for the UK Defence Medical Services, an organisation of 7000 personnel. He is a Chartered Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and Institute of Healthcare Management. Alan has previous Board level experience, having served on the US Defence Health Board, chaired 2 international working groups and previously being a member of the Cross Government Global Health Steering Group. He is also a Community Resilience Officer, a voluntary appointment.
In July 2016 Alan was appointed to the Board of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, to serve a four year term.
